Henderson, Tennessee 鈥 (May 14, 2025) 鈥 Dr. Milton Sewell, longtime chancellor and former president of 海角社区, was named one of 22 inductees into the 2024 Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) Hall of Fame. The annual honor recognizes alumni from Tennessee鈥檚 private colleges and universities who have used their education and talents to make a transformative impact in their communities and beyond.听

Sewell鈥檚 journey with Freed-Hardeman began in 1960 when he enrolled as a student. He earned his associate鈥檚 degree in 1962 before continuing his education at Harding University, the University of North Alabama and the University of Alabama, where he completed his doctorate in educational administration. He spent the early years of his career as a teacher and principal in Alabama and Georgia, before returning to Freed-Hardeman in 1990 as president of the institution.

Sewell, and his wife Laurel, will celebrate 60 years of marriage June 5, next month. 鈥淪he has always been very supportive in my work during my enjoyable career. We have three children, their spouses and six grandchildren. The Lord has blessed me and my family,鈥 he said.听

During his 18-year presidency, Sewell led the university through one of its most transformative periods. Enrollment nearly doubled, the institution transitioned from college to university status, and graduate programs were introduced. The endowment grew by more than 600%, and the campus experienced major expansion, both physically and academically. In 2008, he stepped into the role of chancellor, where he continues to play a vital role in fundraising for operations, scholarships, endowments and capital projects.

鈥淚 am deeply humbled by this recognition,鈥 Sewell said. 鈥淎ny success I鈥檝e had has been through the grace of God and the incredible people who鈥檝e supported me along the way. My goal has always been to serve鈥攖o give back to the institution and community that gave so much to me. I consider this an honor I share with my family, my colleagues, and the many students who inspire me daily.鈥

FHU President David R. Shannon praised Sewell鈥檚 leadership and legacy, calling him 鈥渁 true legend鈥 whose impact can be seen across every corner of the university. 鈥淒r. Milton Sewell stands out on FHU鈥檚 Mt. Rushmore,鈥 Shannon said. 鈥淗e has surpassed N.B. Hardeman in years served, leaving a transformative impact like Hardeman and A.G. Freed. As vice president for advancement, he pioneered fundraising strategies that still serve us today. As president, he led the university into a new era, and his continued service as chancellor remains invaluable. His sage guidance is always timely.鈥

This award and Sewell鈥檚 legacy that continues to reflect the values at the heart of a Freed-Hardeman education鈥攆aith, scholarship and a lifetime of impact were celebrated during an evening session with thousands of 2025 FHU Lectureship guests.
